Pounding Bass
30th-Oct-2012 02:53 pm [apis / lynn, life, migraine, pain]
Lynn says I'm being difficult.

The neighbor behind us keeps playing loud music. For several hours a day / night, including after 11pm and through 2am.

"But you love music."

Yes, I do, but it's far too loud when I can hear it at the far end of the apartment.

"But you love loud music."

Yes, I do, but I love balanced music where the bass is not overpowering everything. And when I'm entering a residential area I turn the music down, even Miss Kid has noticed this.

He says I'm being silly to complain about it because if they receive 3 noise violations from the office then they get an eviction notice on the 4th complaint. He's not home during the day so it doesn't bother him. He sleeps right through it at night so it doesn't bother him. But I'm home and I often can't sleep at night.

Part of why I'm not sleeping is because of pain / migraines which means less sleep which then cycles to not being able to deal with the pain or migraines. There's a pattern here, I just know it. (/sarcasm)

And dealing with thumping bass that has no predictable beat and no words at all that I can hear all day and half the night .. just no. I can't deal. And he doesn't want to be the reason they get evicted.

I don't know how to get him to understand that it's not us being unreasonable, it's the neighbor refusing to be considerate of others.

I'm not sure, but I know that Houston has a noise ordinance law.

I agree ... but I'm also wanting to not be in the office complaining too often since our lease is up in January. I'm not sure we can afford anywhere else to live .. or to move.

Why do you have to involve the office...just call in a noise complaint to the police...if there's a noise ordinance in your town it's there for a reason!

And YOU would not be the reason they get evicted...their continued irresponsibility and bad behavior would be the reason!

I'm with Dragon.

I somewhat agree .. and yet .. there are also issues.

I look at it this way: the first time you call, they'll be alerted that there is a problem. If they don't respond in a compassionate, considerate manner, calling again gets them a sterner warning, hopefully with the "hey, you know we can kick you out" kind of note.

then, if you are bothered and have to call again, they're REALLY on notice, because that's NOT OK in an apartment complex.

Also, it's way nicer than what I used to have to do in one of my complexes. Which was, literally, per the office "call the police." I'd much rather deal with it internally than bring the cops in!

I put up with a lot from my neighbors, but if their music is REGULARLY annoying and loud after 10 at night (that's when our noise ordinance kicks in) or before 9 in the morning...then I'm more apt to complain. Mind you if it's a one time thing (like a Halloween party for instance) I don't bother...but if it's an every night or several nights a week thing...you bet your sweet butt I'm calling someone!

Generally though Jeff has my back and he will go over to the neighbor and ask them to keep it down (and since we don't go to bed until around midnight we usually give them until around then to settle)...so other than the sorority sisters that lived behind me once (they literally had parties EVERY night until 5 a.m.) I've not really had to involve the police. (and Jeff has really only twice in 7 years had to ask neighbors to behave as adults and be respectful)

I'm willing to put up with a lot, confine my complaining to Lynn and to here. It seems like they're slowing down on the all day crap as it's been quiet for a couple days and was only on long enough today for me to get annoyed.

I love Lynn but so much of the time he's of the mind that if it doesn't bother him then it doesn't matter, and there's not much that bothers him. I try not to be a pain in the butt, but when it's causing me pain I can't just sit quietly.

I vote for reporting them too. I believe that when you are moved to make a report then indeed the music is too loud. And your neighbors know this and are being inconsiderate. I have lived next to people like that before. I would not want to do that again.

I do try to not complain much. At least for the most part they appear to have quieted down. I think I can deal with a few hours during the day.
30th-Oct-2012 10:27 pm (UTC)
Have you tried talking to the neighbors directly?
30th-Oct-2012 10:40 pm (UTC)
Yep. The office asked that we do that before we went back to the office. Lynn went over, explained the problem (I suspect he spent more time petting the dog), the music was turned down but within an hour it was back up.

Since the office sent the notice it's been down a lot, if not off. It wasn't over the top today, but I could hear it over the wrestling show I was watching.

I'm in total agreement with you. I can't stand hearing loud music like that from my neighbors. During the day, if it's rare, I'll put up with it. But at night? Or when I'm sleeping? I report it. That's rude to others to play your music that loud.

30th-Oct-2012 10:41 pm (UTC)
Contrary to the belief of some I do try to be considerate of others.
30th-Oct-2012 10:42 pm (UTC)
I'd never assume otherwise from what I know of you. The neighbors though? That is just rude.
31st-Oct-2012 05:12 am (UTC)
Seems like rude is becoming the norm. :(

Oh, man, that sounds so damn frustrating. Thumping bass with no context is one of the worst noises to put up with, day OR night. I'm with you on this -- Lynn/you would NOT be the reason they'd be evicted, THEY would be! For being inconsiderate neighbors who should not be allowed to live in a community of other people!

/rant (sorry)

31st-Oct-2012 05:14 am (UTC)
I'm trying to get him to understand that. On the plus side, since they got the office notice they've been fairly good about it.

No worries about ranting here, it's always allowed. :)

No, I agree with you wholeheartedly on this one. 11pm - 2am is just anti-social - occasionally for a party, perhaps? Regularly, no way!!

I'm a light sleeper, and having to put up with thumping bass like that all night would do my head in. If they can't show consideration for others, then stuff 'um.

Apparently she only does it when she cleans. Really? Because if so she's cleaning nearly all day and half the night. Maybe if she wanted to come over here and clean I'd put up with the noise. ;)
